Foss completely exiting Portland-Astoria market
(PORTLAND, Ore.) -- Tidewater Barge Lines has agreed to acquire Foss Maritime's tugboat business on the Columbia River, the Oregonian newspaper reported. Sixty employees have lost their jobs at unionized Foss. The Seattle company's exit from the Columbia River was attributed to fewer cargo ships calling in the region after deepening of the port accommodated larger ships carrying more cargo.
