Court upholds Coast Guard detention of Maltese coal ship

(NORFOLK, Va.) — A federal appeals court ruled Monday that the U.S. Coast Guard is properly detaining a Maltese-flagged coal ship for alleged environmental violations, The Virginian-Pilot reported. Antonis G. Pappadakis and its 20-member crew have been held in Virginia since April. A lower court judge in May had cleared the ship to leave, pending payment of a $1.5 million bond.
