(BALTIMORE) — The adrift cruise ship Lyubov Orlova is being used to test the Global Maritime Awareness System developed by a retired U.S. Coast Guard technology consultant, The Telegram newspaper reported. The derelict, unmanned cruise ship broke free from towlng vessels and has drifted almost all the way across the North Atlantic to near the coast of Ireland. The Global Maritime Awareness System uses various satellites to form a sort of international Automated Identification System (AIS) that would combine radar and photo signals to track ships over long distances.
