Box ship needs to drop anchor to avoid collision with Navy tugs

(NEWPORT NEWS, Va.) — A containership needed to drop anchor to avoid a collision with Navy tugboats, the Daily Press newspaper reported. Pilots and officers aboard 902-foot APL Oman needed to stop suddenly when two Navy tugs crossed their bow in Thimble Shoals channel, near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. The tugs were pulling a roll-on, roll-off ship at the time of the near-miss.
