(ASTORIA, Ore.) — Clatsop Community College has been designated as Oregon’s Maritime Training College with the unanimous adoption of Senate Resolution 201 by the Oregon State Senate on February 28, 2014.

Sponsored by Senator Betsy Johnson, the Resolution recognizes the importance of the growing maritime industry to Oregon’s economy, notes that Clatsop Community College is the only community college in the nation with a USCG approved Training Ship Program authorized to provide a student with all the sea service credit required for an Able Seaman-Special endorsement, and concludes that this designation supports Clatsop Community College, the maritime industry and Oregon’s economy.

In response to this designation, Kristen Wilkin, Dean of Workforce Education and Training, commented, “I have a quote on my wall from Poet Pablo Neruda that says, ‘I need the sea because it teaches me.’ and that is what the CCC Maritime Science Department instills in our students whether new to this profession or returning for training.  In my mind, this Resolution solidifies our place within the State of Oregon and demonstrates what the Clatsop Community College Maritime Science program strives to do each day.”

CCC President Lawrence Galizio expressed his appreciation for Senator Johnson’s sponsorship of Senate Resolution 201 and her dedication to higher education and Clatsop Community College, “Senator Johnson is a tireless proponent of Clatsop Community College and we are extremely grateful for her hard work that made this designation a reality. Senator Johnson is well aware of the unique benefit that Clatsop’s Maritime Science program provides for our regional economy. Her efforts have now brought this special resource to the forefront at a statewide level.”
