Crowley presents Deck Excellence and Seamanship Award to California Maritime Academy Cadet Samuel Thompson

(JACKSONVILLE, Fla.; July 23, 2009) California Maritime Academy Cadet Samuel Thompson was presented Crowley’s Deck Excellence and Seamanship Award during the academy’s recent graduation ceremonies. Thompson, a marine transportation major, has proved himself as an exemplary cadet and future seaman, has served as squad academic and training leader, section academic and training leader, and company chief mate.
As company chief mate, Thompson initiated and penned most of a new training manual for cadets, which focuses primarily on real-world and practical skills. He also was instrumental in starting an instructional website for cadets and professional mariners alike. The website includes tutorials and lessons in radar, celestial navigation, terrestrial navigation, among other topics.
“Cadet Thompson has many of the characteristics needed to be a successful in this business,” said Chris Peterson, Crowley’s vice president of marine services, who presented the award. “We are pleased to be able to recognize him with this award and wish him a long and rewarding career.”
William B. Eisenhardt, president of Cal Maritime, also thanked Crowley for the company’s continued involvement in education.
“Thank you for adding so significantly to our awards ceremony,” he said. “Your continued participation and support of our graduates plays a significant part in our commencement activities.”
