Canada’s Senate asks Coast Guard not to fire lighthouse keepers

(VANCOUVER, British Columbia) — The Canadian Senate has issued a report urging the Coast Guard not to fire lighthouse keepers in favor of automated technology, The Province newspaper of Vancouver reported. The news was greeted favorably along the British Columbia coastline, where jobs were to have been cut in a money-saving move by the Coast Guard. The union representing the keeper said the Senate recognized their valuable role in maritime safety and environmental stewardship.
