Prince William Sound grounding renews call for tanker escorts

(VALDEZ, Alaska) — The grounding of the tugboat Pathfinder in Prince William Sound has renewed calls to require all tankers leaving Port Valdez to have tug escorts, the news Web site Alaska Dispatch reported. Though it was equipped with modern navigation technology, the Pathfinder strayed even farther off-course than the Exxon Valdez did. Some officials want a renewal of tug escort requirement for all single-hull and double-hull tankers, on both the port and starboard.
