Coast Guard boat, recreational vessel involved in fatal collision

The following is the text of a press release issued by the U.S. Coast Guard:

 

(SAN DIEGO) — One person is reported dead and several others have been taken to the hospital as a result of a collision between a 33-foot Coast Guard boat and a recreational vessel in San Diego Bay Sunday evening. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this tragic incident.

“We, along with other agencies: the San Diego Fire Department, the San Diego Harbor Police and the NTSB will conduct a thorough investigation to try to determine what led to this tragedy and what can be done to prevent similar incidents in the future,” said Sector San Diego Commander, Capt. Tom Farris.

A Coast Guard investigator at the University of California, San Diego hospital confirmed one passenger who was taken to the hospital was pronounced dead.

The recreational vessel is reported to be 24 feet in length and had 13 people on board.
The Coast Guard Cutter Haddock, an 87-foot patrol boat stationed at Sector San Diego, assisted in providing medical assistance to the passengers and transported them to awaiting emergency medical personnel.

The Coast Guard small boat had five people on board, and was responding to a report of a grounded vessel at the time of the collision.

Both vessels involved in the collision returned to shore and are being assessed for damages.

Weather conditions at the time of the accident were clear with light winds.

The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.
