(ST. HELENS, OR — September 19, 2007) Hanjin Beijing, a 66,654gt container ship, refloated at about 0530 on Sept. 19 after going aground on the Columbia River, near St. Helens, Ore., according to a release from the U.S. Coast Guard.
The 872-foot Korean-flagged vessel grounded near mile 84 at 0300 on Sept. 19 with 15 crewmembers on board.
The vessel is owned by Korea French Banking Corp. of Seoul and is operated by Hanjin Shipping Co., also of Seoul.
Hanjin Beijing departed Portland, Ore. on Sept. 17 at 1145, according to the Hanjin Shipping Web site.
Four tug boats, marine inspectors and Coast Guard investigators were assessing the vessel when it refloated due to changing river conditions and an incoming tide.
No injuries were reported and there was no sign of pollution. The vessel was not taking on water, according to initial tank soundings and damage assessments.
Hanjin Beijing is being escorted to Kalama, Wash. by tugs, where the container ship will undergo a damage survey before departing for its next port.
