As Arctic navigation beckons, Canada orders powerful icebreaker

(INUVIK, Northwest Territories) — Canada by 2017 will have a new icebreaker that will be the nation’s most powerful, the Globe & Mail newspaper reported. The new Coast Guard vessel will be named after former Prime Minister John Diefenbaker, who was an advocate for Canada’s North. The icebreaker is the most expensive item on Prime Minister Harper’s initiative to explore the Arctic, where melting ice is opening new areas for navigation and mineral exploration.
